On the cover
Local photographer Ran Fuchs, an award-winning talent, has claimed the top spot in our Front Cover photography competition. We interviewed him about his creative journey and the inspiration behind his stunning work.
Where are you based and what do you love most about living locally?
I’m Ran. I’m a photographer, mostly of birds and wildlife. Until recently, I lived right next to Lisgar Gardens, which I consider one of the best parts of Sydney. It’s surrounded by nature, has great food, and a strong mix of cultures, which gives the area real character. These days I also spend a lot of time travelling overseas, especially in Asia and Europe.
How did you first get into photography?
I’ve loved nature since I was a child and always felt a strong need to share what I see and experience. When I retired, photography became the perfect way to do that. I completed a diploma in photography and spent time exploring many different genres, including schools, sports, and architecture.
What do you love most about Hornsby?
I love the balance. There is strong natural beauty alongside interesting houses and architecture, and there is always life happening outdoors. This mix creates endless opportunities, not only for nature photography but also for street photography, where small everyday moments are wonderful opportunities for bigger stories.
Can you tell us the story behind this winning photo?
The painted mural had caught my attention for a long time. The alley is narrow, and the light is often challenging, either too harsh or too dark. I knew the angle and lens I wanted, so the photo became an exercise in patience. I waited until the day when the light finally matched what I had imagined.
What inspires your photography?
Nature is my main source of inspiration. It’s what gets me up early and motivates me to explore. Sometimes, completely ordinary or unexpected things stop me in my tracks and feel worth preserving.
What does it mean to you to be on the front cover of this magazine?
Seeing my image on the front of my local magazine means a great deal to me. I’m used to sharing my bird photography, so having a non-wildlife image recognised feels both surprising and deeply rewarding.
Dream location to photograph?
Just recently, I discovered Vietnam. I can’t get enough of it.
