It might sound like the best health advice you have ever received.
Eat pudding. Sing a few songs. Have a laugh with strangers.
As it turns out, there may be more truth in that than you think.
While pudding itself probably is not the secret to a longer life, the things that often happen while you are eating it, sharing a table, laughing with others, feeling part of something, really can be good for your health.
Most of us understand the importance of looking after our physical health. Increasingly, we are also recognising the importance of mental health.
But there is a third pillar that is often overlooked: social health.
Social health is our ability to build meaningful relationships, feel connected to others and experience a genuine sense of belonging. It is now recognised as a vital contributor to our overall wellbeing, not a nice to have, but a genuine need.
In 2025, the World Health Organisation named social connection a global public health priority, pointing to growing evidence that loneliness and social isolation are linked to poorer physical and mental health, including increased risks of cardiovascular disease, depression, anxiety and dementia. The report estimates that loneliness contributes to around 871,000 deaths each year worldwide, a sobering number for something so quietly solvable.
The encouraging news is that improving our social health does not have to involve major life changes.
Sometimes it starts by simply showing up.
That is why The Social Local Collective, a local charity based in Sydney’s north, creates welcoming community events where making new connections happens naturally. We believe that improving health does not always begin in a doctor’s surgery or a gym. Sometimes it begins around a shared table, during a walk, over a cup of tea, or while singing alongside people you have only just met.
Our final Social Pudding Club for the year will be held on Saturday 3 October. It is an afternoon of delicious desserts, easy conversation and unexpected laughter, where people of all ages come together to meet someone new in a relaxed, welcoming environment. Whether you come with friends or arrive on your own, you will find a friendly seat at the table waiting for you.
The following weekend, on Sunday 11 October, we are excited to launch Rise and Shine, a brand new outdoor community event celebrating movement, music and connection.
It is not about being fit. It is not about being able to sing.
It is about starting your day surrounded by friendly faces, gentle movement, uplifting music and plenty of fun. The first event is free, although registrations are essential.
Whether you are new to the area, recently retired, working from home, living alone, or simply hoping to meet more people, we would love to welcome you.
Because better health is not only about eating well or exercising more.
It is also about having people to laugh with. People who know your name. People who make you feel like you belong.
