Opening doors to independence
Before Isla, independent living for Karlee felt overwhelming, shaped by anxiety and reliance on others. With Isla by her side, that changed.
We spoke to Karlee Symonds from Hornsby about how Isla’s steady guidance has helped her live independently. Together they now navigate public transport, busy shopping centres and unfamiliar spaces with confidence, trust and ease.
How long have you had Isla and how did you get her?
I was matched with Isla in July 2023. Isla was trained by Guide Dogs NSW/ ACT and completed two years of training prior to being matched with me. I have been supported by Guide Dogs NSW/ACT from a young age and have received multiple services, including orientation and mobility training, assistive technology training, occupational therapy, as well as Guide Dog mobility services.
How does Isla help you with day-to-day activities?
Isla supports me to navigate my community independently and safely. Isla walks me around obstacles, indicates stairs and road crossings, and is impeccable at helping me find different objects and landmarks, including train doors, seats, traffic light poles, escalators and even specific buildings or shops.
How has Isla changed your life?
While I still face societal barriers around accessibility and inclusion, Isla has truly opened up my world. Isla has given me a greater level of independence and freedom. Isla has also given me the confidence to pursue many opportunities, including moving to Sydney for the first time independently, attending university as well as gaining employment.
What’s your favourite places to go in and around Hornsby?
Isla and I love to be out and about in the community. We often visit students at preschools, primary and high schools as a part of Guide Dogs NSW/ ACT student education program, where we raise awareness about Blindness and Low Vision, and highlight the many barriers that people face within our society, in the hope to eradicate them and create greater accessibility and inclusion. Within the sessions, I also speak about the different mobility aids available such as Canes and Guide Dogs to assist people with Blindness or Low Vision to independently navigate their community, and Isla absolutely loves to demonstrate her targeting skills by showing everyone how she finds me a seat. Isla is honestly such a queen and loves sitting on stage crossing her paws.
In 2026, Isla won the People’s Choice Award in the Puppy Tales Australian Dog of the Year Awards. Now in their seventh year, the Awards share stories from across the country, celebrating dogs of all breeds, backgrounds and abilities who are making a meaningful difference. Included in the win was a $250 donation to Karlee’s nominated charity Guide Dogs NSW/ACT. For more information, visit puppytales.com.au
