Why a Duke of Ed Level matters to employers
The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award (Duke of Ed) is widely recognised across Australia, yet its recruitment value is often underestimated.
Duke of Ed Australia CEO Helen White believes employers should pay closer attention to this globally respected framework.
Established 70 years ago and delivered in more than 130 countries, the Duke of Ed is undertaken primarily by high school students, with registrations growing among university students. As demand rises for skills beyond academic results, registrations continue to grow in Australia and worldwide.
The Duke of Ed is a four- part, non-formal education framework that supports students in Years 9 to 12 to set and achieve personal goals across a balanced range of activities. The result is the development of practical, transferable workplace skills.
For employers, achieving a Duke of Ed Level signals that a candidate has demonstrated such things as effective confidence, perseverance, problem- solving, critical thinking, teamwork, and resilience.
These capabilities are increasingly important. In 2024, CSIRO analysis of more than 12 million job advertisements found interpersonal and analytical skills continue to grow in demand. As organisations adapt to an AI-driven future, strong social and adaptive skills are becoming even more valuable.
More than 150 organisations are Duke of Ed Employer Partners. These partners actively ask candidates whether they have achieved a Duke of Ed Level and it’s these candidates that show proof to prospective employers by sharing a verified digital badge as evidence.
Employer feedback supports its impact. Ivan Macfadyen, Director of Walking Rivers and Duke of Ed Employer, notes that Duke of Ed achievers often demonstrate resilience, determination and strong teamwork skills beyond their peers.
Nearly 60,000 young Australians are currently completing the Duke of Ed, with numbers increasing each year as employer recognition grows. Helen White encourages organisations to ask a simple question during recruitment: Have you completed a Duke of Ed Level?
For local organisations in Hornsby and surrounds seeking capable, resilient and well-rounded young employees, recognising the Duke of Ed can be a practical and forward- thinking recruitment step.
