Karen Humphries turns rare cancer into courage, community and “chronic wisdom”.
Karen Humphries is a familiar face in the community. She was a runner up for the Westfield Local Heroes in 2025 and she has twice been recognised in Parliament by MP Matt Cross.
She is a Stage 4 cancer survivor of a rare and incurable bile duct cancer of the biliary tract called cholangiocarcinoma. And she has lived with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome a rare genetic connective tissue disorder for over 30 years.
Karen has turned her pain, sessions of chemotherapy and immunotherapy, countless surgeries, hospital stays, as well as being reliant at times on using both a wheelchair and walking stick and involuntary childlessness into a positive and thought- provoking book ‘Chronic Wisdom’.
Karen’s book launch at the Royal North Shore Hospital, with over 70 medical professionals, cancer and wellbeing organisations and friends in attendance, held in conjunction on World Cholangiocarcinoma Day helped her to tell her story whilst also raising vital funds for the ongoing research to understand cholangiocarcinoma cancer, help to navigate new treatments and a better prognosis for this aggressive life-threatening cancer.
“My goal is to write another book. There are 7 books in me.”
“Managing your cancer and navigating treatments means finding your village of good medical people.”
Karen was in her thirties when she was first diagnosed with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome and has lived with a colostomy bag for the past 16 years. She was diagnosed with cholangiocarcinoma aged forty-seven.
Karen is such a positive and strong lady and she has used her knowledge and personal experience to educate trainee doctors and teach them about Stoma training.
“Managing your trauma, changing your attitude and learning to live with the cancer is part of the recovery. Having an altruistic outlook, setting goals, having a spiritual belief and ‘just living my life’ have all helped.”
“You have to learn to advocate for yourself.”
“I am going to do everything in my power to stay alive.”
Last year, Karen, alongside her key physiotherapist, walked the City to Surf, 14 kms in just 3.5 hours, to raise money for the NORTH Foundation Charity.
Karen has been actively involved in fundraising for cancer research through her sock range. Her initiative, “Socks4Cancer,” allows the community to purchase socks that support the research and treatment of cholangiocarcinoma and other cancers. The socks are a way for Karen to raise funds for research, mentor others and support charities. Her efforts have been recognised and have helped raise significant amounts of money for various causes.
More funding is needed for cholangiocarcinoma research. Donations can be made through the NORTH Foundation Charity arm.
$5 from every book sold from Karen’s website and book launch went to Professor Nick Pavlakis’s Cholangiocarcinoma Research Fund via the NORTH Foundation, the charity partner for the NSLHD and Royal North Shore Hospital. A raffle was also organised for the GI Cancer Trials and all funds raised went toward the Cholangiocarcinoma BIL-PPP trial fund.
“You have to be the change you want to make.”
