Century of the “Old Pub”
There’s a reason locals still affectionately call the Hornsby Railway Hotel “The Old Pub.”
Standing proudly opposite the station since 1888, the Railway Hotel has long acted as a sentinel for Hornsby, watching what was once a remote bush outpost grow into the vibrant northern gateway it is today. As Hornsby’s very first commercial building, its history is woven into the fabric of the Shire. It has survived world wars, rail expansions, and multiple town redevelopments to remain the warm, beating heart of the community.
And while the era of horse-drawn carts rattling past the front door is long gone, the hotel’s commitment to genuine, traditional hospitality remains unchanged. Today, “The Old Pub” blends its century old character with a refreshed, contemporary energy that reflects the evolving spirit of Hornsby.
Accommodation is also available on site, continuing the longstanding tradition of hosting travellers passing through Hornsby’s busy rail corridor.
At the hotel’s heart is the Station Street Bistro, a dining experience that captures both nostalgia and global flavour. Here, a perfectly grilled scotch fillet sits comfortably beside one of Hornsby’s most surprising favourites: authentic Nepalese MoMo dumplings. This harmony of classic pub fare and Himalayan spice is a testament to the diverse, multicultural community “The Old Pub” welcomes daily. With family friendly offerings, including the ever popular $5 kids’ meals on Friday nights with any adult main, $20 Burger Mondays, and midweek schnitzels, the bistro remains a reliable go to for quality, value, and genuine comfort.
As Hornsby continues to evolve, so does the Railway Hotel. The recent closure of Infuse Nightclub marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter for the venue, as plans move forward for a fresh renovation that will introduce new spaces and entertainment experiences while staying true to the pub’s heritage. These upcoming changes promise to bring something vibrant and modern to the community, without losing the charm that locals love.
Beyond food and drink, the Hornsby Railway Hotel has grown into a true entertainment hub. Each week offers a lively mix of events that bring locals together including free trivia, poker nights, classic meat raffles and open mic nights that proudly support local musicians, singers and artists, giving homegrown talent a platform to shine. There are plans for live music and bands to return with an exciting new entertainment program to relaunch after renovations.
These weekly moments of fun, creativity, and connection celebrate the hotel’s enduring role as a gathering place, a role it has fulfilled for nearly 140 years.
From milestone birthdays in the versatile event spaces to a quiet schooner in the sports bar before the train home, the Hornsby Railway Hotel continues to do what it has always done best: create a place where everyone feels welcome.
In a world that changes fast, “The Old Pub” remains a friendly, familiar anchor, proof that some things only get better with age.
