In a world where we’re always scrolling, tapping and swiping, there’s something refreshingly simple about sitting down at a table with real people, great conversation and a box full of board games.
That’s exactly what you’ll find with the Upper North Shore Board Gamers (UNSBG), a local group that began as a love of board games eleven years ago and has grown into a much-loved Friday night tradition at Hornsby RSL.
Each week from 6pm to 12am, and often well beyond, game lovers gather to share an evening of strategy, laughter and a little friendly competition. There’s no membership fee, no pressure and no commitment, just a welcoming space where you can stay for an hour or the whole night.
On a typical night, 20 to 30 players gather, often splitting into four or five tables so several games can be played at once. The mix is as varied as the players themselves, with everything from family favourites to social deduction and card games, dexterity challenges and more.
Founded in 2015 by Simon Melkman and given playing space by the generous Larry Leonard within Larry’s game shop. UNSBG has peaked and plummeted over the years. After the pandemic of 2020 the group was resuscitated by Evie Halliday who has taken the group from strength-to-strength. Out-growing the friendly local game shop, Evie moved the group to the once quiet, but now thriving Sports Bar area of Hornsby RSL, where the group continues to get larger and larger… and louder!
Supporting Evie in her role, the other group admins; Thomas Skowron, who does a lot of the heavy lifting such as lugging bags and bags of board games to game nights, as well as co-hosting the major group events with Evie; and, in the background, Ben Williams, who takes enquiries and co-ordinates with Evie for special one-off events such as game play-testing; and of course, Simon, who still enjoys our group events!
Speaking of group events, for those who like a tradition worth looking forward to, the annual Christmas Party is a highlight on the calendar, complete with a stealing Santa gift exchange, colouring competitions, dinner, games and plenty of fun.
If you’re looking for a different kind of night out, one that swaps screens for strategy and strangers for smiles, the Upper North Shore Board Gamers might just be your perfect play.
