Kathy Wallace has lived in the local area for most of her life and is passionate about the Hornsby locality. For Kathy, after surviving breast cancer, photography is even more important as a way to enjoy life!
What do you love most about living locally?
I live in Hornsby in a unit facing west, on a clear day seeing as far as the Blue Mountains. It is wonderful, as I am often rewarded with amazing sunsets (often photographed!) and bushland vistas.
How did you first get into photography?
When my son became more independent, it was time to start thinking about myself more. I set about exploring more of the city on the weekends and started using a little compact camera to capture interesting places and I also joined a Sydney Photography Group.
What do you love most about photography?
Photography has made me see the world completely afresh. The way the light falls on subjects, shapes and patterns in the natural and built world. Having never thought I had a creative bone in my body, I found a way to be creative and express myself differently.
Can you tell us the story behind this winning photo?
As a local resident, I have been keenly watching the progress of the Quarry project. The day the Crusher Plant Precinct opened, the afternoon light was beautiful. The lookout structure is a definite drawcard and looked amazing, with the rust colours highlighted in the afternoon light. I started looking for an interesting composition.
What inspires your photography?
Over the years, I have been drawn into photographing architecture, exterior and interior, modern and heritage and all in between. My aim is to take photos that are visually interesting and make people think “Oh, I would never have noticed that building or feature”.
What does it mean to you to be on the front cover of this magazine?
The timing couldn’t be better. I am currently setting up architecture photo walks in Sydney — a dream I have had for a while. Having my first magazine front cover, gives me a boost of confidence to follow through with that dream!
Dream location to photograph?
There are way too many places in the world to choose one dream location. But I was in architecture heaven when in Spain in 2017. In terms of landscape photography, a trip to the South Island of New Zealand has only whetted my appetite to see more there.
