Where creativity meets community
Studio ARTES, a local Hornsby based organisation is empowering adults with disability by engaging in creativity, connection and community.
Founded in 2000, by a teacher from Clarke Road School and an occupational therapist, they recognised a gap in support after students finished school. Studio ARTES was formed, which provides social connection for adults with disability, fostering life skills, opportunities and creative pathways.
Today, as a registered NDIS provider, Studio ARTES continues to honour its founding vision by empowering people with disability through creative programs led by professional artists in visual arts, performing arts, and life skills. They operate in their Hornsby studio, established in 2000, and their Inner West studio, established in 2021, alongside online and community-based programs, Studio ARTES offers bespoke support through group sessions, one-on-one assistance and community access programs.
Creativity is at the heart of the Visual Arts program, where members explore a variety of mediums like painting, sculpture, textiles and mixed media while developing independent and collaborative projects. Their members have exhibited at the Wallarobba Arts and Cultural Centre and The Concourse, appeared in the Archibald Prize and Vivid Sydney, and had artwork featured in community initiatives, like MP James Wallace’s 2025 Christmas cards.
The Performing Arts program provides daily opportunities for expression and collaboration. Members develop performances from concept to stage, learning skills in music, dance, drama, costuming and production. Achievements include performances at the Sydney Opera House, the Midday Mingle Podcast on Triple H radio, and the studio’s band, Swamp Dogs, whose original songs continue to grow an online audience.
Beyond the arts programs, their Life Skills programs support independence through practical learning in cooking, budgeting, self-care, numeracy, and literary skills, while the Out & About programs and excursions offer opportunities to explore new places and connect with the community.
Dedicated to inclusion, equity and respect, Studio ARTES supports every member to pursue their goals, whether that means developing a professional arts practice or creating purely for joy.
