Meet Calvin the Hedgedog — Cherrybrook’s hedge-y celebrity charming locals one adorable outfit at a time.
Calvin was born on the 13 March 2022 during a Covid lock down. His owner, Norm, had been listening to a radio show at work where the topic was things that, when you were young, made someone’s house look like a mansion.
One listener recounted that a friend had concrete lions on either side of their driveway, which conveyed a grand residence. A couple of weeks later, Norm was mowing the front verge and looked up to see the four scruffy, irregular pine trees on the side of my driveway, and Norm thought to himself, “I could turn them into a lion as a joke.” Thirty minutes later, Calvin was born.
Norm said, “Not long after, my wife’s friend was passing by with her husband and they were arguing that the topiary bush looked like a dinosaur and she argued it was obviously a dog. So my wife and I took out some Christmas ribbon and an old wreath and made him a dog collar to settle that argument. Meanwhile, a jogger in a Facebook mothers’ group was commenting about a giant topiary hedge shaped like a dog on New Line Road that was “twice as big as my car”, so I decided to create his page on Facebook as “Calvin Hedgedog” to share the love.”
One Halloween they decided to decorate the dog for the young boy and girl next door. The boy said he should be called Calvin. Since then Calvin has dressed up for Christmas, Easter, the Olympics, Anzac Day, Valentines Day, New Years Eve and the World Cup soccer and the posts on Facebook have helped him find 5,800 friends and followers. He’s been interviewed on Channel 7 Sunday night news, talked about on radio shows and at the request of some fans has launched his very own tree-shirt and tote bag merch.
Just type “Calvin the Hedgedog” into Google and see the 92 five-star reviews! Not bad for an inanimate four year old pine tree.
We sat down with Calvin to ask him a few questions:
What’s your favourite thing you love about your neighbourhood, Calvin?
Watching all the children pass by on their way to school and activities. I know one family has to do multiple drive-bys if all the kids haven’t seen “The puppy bush” on the first pass.
If you could eat one treat forever, what would it be?
Once for Christmas a fan dropped off some chocolates and some liquid fertiliser. Sadly my humans said chocolate was bad for dogs. My fir needles were so shiny after that other stuff though.
Who is your favourite human and why?
My creator/stylist’s wife is a very special human that gets some of the best decorations for me to dress up in on special occasions and is a great assistant stylist.
What’s been your favourite outfit so far?
Christmas 2025, I got a custom glowing star for my head, but the giant glittery lollies that they put in my mouth were so delicious, and two of my young fans, Thomas and Nina, came over to help decorate me. That was special.
If you could talk for one day, what’s the first thing you would say?
I’d say hello to my gorgeous Connie (pine tree) that sits across the New Line Road from me and my beautiful pine pup in a pot, daughter, Timberley Pinelope Evergreen Hedgedog. The second thing would be to bark at that black sports car that races past late on a Friday night.
Calvin lives at 156 New Line Road, Cherrybrook.
He’s easy to find on Google Maps.
